I think those decisions will be made, I wouldn't be surprised if they happen among graphics card folks, chipmakers, as well as anyone out there, regardless of what they make. Ive actually been in the factory where they make those mirrors, and the surface of the mirror is smooth to the level of one atom. Indeed it's not a rosy outlook, and no doubt PC gaming will have its fair share of ups and downs before there's an abundance of graphics cards. And that gives you lots of opportunity for things to go wrong when you have something like COVID come in. And they spent $20-plus . They held back, and didnt invest in a lot of manufacturing capacity when TSMC did. Lets talk about that for a second. One of the themes of the tech industry right now is consolidation. What kind of company are they? Because these major chipmakers have numerous suppliers, and these suppliers have suppliers, and so on and so fourth until you finally reach a company dealing exclusively in raw materials. There's no doubt that companies will want to maximise their profits and expand their total market, but the smart ones are probably not going to rush into meeting the sudden, perhaps unexpected, demand. We said that in a sane GPU market, the price was about $100 too high for the performance offered . In the long term, it is about the cutting edge technology. We ask a lot of CEOs, when do you think the chip shortage will be over? And the some varies depending on the time of day, the week, the month and whatever, and what other people are buying. And throughout the 80s and the 90s and the early 2000s TSMC just doggedly worked on improving their product offerings and became a very service-oriented company. And there are companies called outsource assembly and test factories, who will put these little probes on each chip and test which ones are good to make sure theyre good. So I think the average selling price for a vehicle now is over $40,000 recently. AMD's Radeon RX 6700 XT launched at $480 in mid-March. Because if you had 99 percent yield for the first step and 99 percent for the second step, you and I would think, Wow, thats pretty good, right? But if you take 99 percent yield through 700 steps, by the time youre done, youll get nothing at the end which is workable. I think Intel is out to try to climb back to the top of the ladder. And hes also an expert in supply chains how things go from raw materials to finished products in stores. So, thats going to affect a lot of the packaging factories there. When we look at these mRNA vaccines for COVID-19, a lot of people look at that and say, what a spectacular accomplishment, all these US companies, Pfizer and Moderna, they did it in 18 months. In order to buy a graphics card in 2021 you'll need smarts, agility, and, most of all, a bit of luck on your side. In hopes of explaining this phenomena, I've been speaking with Dr. Thomas Goldsby, the Haslam Chair of Logistics at the University of Tennessees Master's of Science in Supply Chain Management online program, and a certified supply chain expert. And when were done with those four, Ill give you another four. When you say demand will stabilize, is it that people have just bought enough laptops? But should gamers fret about that? "They usually co-develop these chips together. I had just been to the GlobalFoundries fab in Malta, New York, and they had spent $15 billion to get 30,000 wafer starts per month at 14 nanometers so its not even leading edge, but its a nice fab. "Well, to the extent that you own and control your own destiny, absolutely," he explains. So why should I do it? "So it's very hard. As Dr. Goldsby points out, no company wants to be backed into a corner when it comes to manufacturingit's desirable to have options, even redundancy, in your supply chain. And we had this wave of innovation and discovery, which laid the foundation for companies like Moderna, technologies like mRNA vaccines. The likes of AMD, Nvidia extract top performance from their designs through tight partnerships with foundries, as Dr. Goldsby explains. And what theyll do is multiple steps of lithography, and etching, and deposition. Today @Intel CEO @PGelsinger marked the beginning of construction on two new chip factories, bringing Intel's total investment in Arizona to more than $50 billion. Is this something that needs to continue to start building more chips in the United States? How long and how much money? I actually visited that fab a couple months after that disruption. Why isnt Intel just saying, Were going to do a capital raise and spend this money? Because they will get the return. And how long would you like to play this game? "And many people are blaming lean manufacturing systems.". The graphics controller had Direct3D 6.0 and OpenGL support, although it was a very low-performance product for 3D acceleration. They're probably going to direct it to where they have the most strategic relationships, long term interest. In 1975, the UK company Quantel, . Chip manufacturing is very water-dependent. But it also highlights a couple of issues. Now you have a wafer that, if it is a microprocessor, might have like 500 chips on them. So, in reality, a tight relationship between AMD and TSMC, or Nvidia and Samsung, or Intel operating its own fabs, has more than likely played a huge role in securing the supply these companies have enjoyed, and not been a detriment to it. China typically produces and sells around 25 million vehicles a year, whereas the US production is typically around 11.5 million vehicles, and the US imports a lot of vehicles. After racking up losses of $35 million in the first half of this year, the company managed to carve out a profit for the 1997 fiscal year ended in June, thanks to a strong fourth quarter. Because when that one went down back in 2011, it took down Toyota and Nissan and Honda, a couple of General Motors lines, I think a PSA line in Europe. And they spent $20-plus billion last year, and theyve been spending $10 to $20 billion a year for the last decade. We had the cold weather shutdown in Texas, which shut down the NXP factories in Austin and the Samsung factory in Austin. And the design part involves engineers laying out a circuit, which will have transistors and itll have lots of other components connected in a particular way. Another dynamic that was going on at the time; the US had sanctioned a number of Chinese companies like Huawei. And then in March of this year, Renesas in Japan had a fire in their fab, which makes 40 percent of the microcontrollers for automobiles. And what you want to do is keep it running. That's just not much of an olive branch during a tumultuous time such as this, when most semiconductor companies are in the same boat in terms of supply. Hes the professor of management practices at Harvard Business School. Lets start even farther back. What I will observe about that is Toyota has always had that approach, and they have fared much better in the pandemic. Well, I see people talking about it. I feel like because of the chip shortage, we heard about every disruption to the supply chain constantly. Thats great advice. And often theres a new process node, they get smaller. I ask Dr. Goldsby for his thoughts on reviving old cards in this way. I do think its important for us to be able to manufacture the most advanced semiconductor technology in the USbut if you think youre going to be an island, not dependent on the rest of the world for anything elseI dont think its going to happen.. And you're willing to pay when push comes to shove, we're going to face a shortage, and a manufacturer has to allocate a suddenly very finite supply. So what happened is the automakers canceled orders or didnt order, because they said, Were not going to need all these chips. If you go back to May 2020, Boston Consulting Group put out this forecast that overall, 2020 global vehicle sales would drop 14 to 22 percent, in their most likely case. Professor Thomas Goldsby holds a BS in Business Administration, an MBA, and PhD in Marketing and Logistics. Well, when COVID hit a couple of things happened. So thats even crazier. No, because there are many ways to market that decision, or even try and not market that card at all, that may still make it worthwhile during these desperate times. Because to your second question, a modern fab these days, one of the closer-to-leading-edge ones will cost you $10 billion-plus for the smallest efficient scale, and a really efficient scale will probably cost you closer to $20 billion. We need to order more chips. All that capacity, or a lot of that capacity for those chips, was already taken up by other players. So I told this person, Oh, I dont know. So, thats a lot of additional work. And when he got back up, he said, What did you say? And I said, I dont know, 10 times that, $150 billion. So its that problem, where were having these shortages that are preventing manufacturers from building the product. And if you're making a huge amount of money selling everything product you make, what's the rush? When we look at the plants being proposed in the United States, theres the Samsung factory in Texas. So TSMC obviously spends a lot of money. In those days that was work that most chip manufacturers didnt want to do because it was capital-intensive and it was hard work. It's a complex chain, essentially. But we are constantly seeing new chips. With them we've grown more attuned to the prevailing headwinds of semiconductor manufacturing. So, well over $150 million for a single machine. On April 1, 2009, SGI filed for bankruptcy and was acquired by Rackable Systems a few weeks later. But let me ask you this. Sometimes it can be buried way in the engine compartment or way behind the dash. You actually see that sometimes companies' innovation cycles get slowed down because they've got to clear out this inventory.". And I think the chip makers, and even the folks that are supplying the chip makers, are going 'hey, we've seen this game before, everybody's crying for materials right now, crying for product, and as soon as we get that product online, where's the demand?' How do you think that plays out from the perspective of American foreign policy affecting consumer supply chains? And its like, Wait a minute, guys. So a lot of those old chips are older technology and they are commodities. The legacy of Silicon Graphics can still be seen in the Nintendo 64, which they helped develop, and several Hollywood movies, including Jurassic Park, Twister, Congo, Toy Story, and many. They just didn't prepare for what we call a Black Swan Event, which is what pandemic representssomething that we had not really witnessed on the scale that we've seen.". So its not like you can switch out in the middle, unless you design it with the idea that I am going to be able to accommodate two different parts or three different parts, so that I could substitute them when they come in. We saw during the shortages that Tesla redesigned some of their parts to use different chips, because they couldnt get the chips they had been using. Everything from the microprocessor chips that go into your notebook computer, to the chips that go into your phone or chips that go into your Sony PlayStation console, or your TV set, or your car, or your refrigerator, or what have you. You tend to find very tight, highly controlled relationships between them, which doesn't make it easy to find those alternatives and build that redundancy.". "And so they do have to be very savvy about going, 'Hey, where can we make a buck? "It has stretched the imagination, certainly, to find ourselves in this situation," Dr. Goldsby continues. One of the things that I have seen play out, we talk to a lot of car company CEOs on Decoder. So you really need to have 99.99-plus percent yield on every step.. Right now, the Biden plan, I think its $50 billion or $52 billion in incentives, subsidies. We tend to forget that theres these enormously complicated manufacturing techniques in the background, enabling all of the internet, all of the digital world, to exist. Now that supply chain is fairly complex as well. Not illogical. So then what they do is they take that wafer, ship it to usually southeast Asia or China. I tried to buy a freezer back then and my dealer said, Who are you kidding? John Peddie Research estimates that Nvidia and AMD collectively shipped 12 million desktop cards in during Q1 2021, about 80% of which were from Nvidia. Ive been in Asia on Christmas Day, and there are people out there with jackhammers and pouring concrete because it was like, Man, every minute this thing gets done sooner, we can start generating cash.
