Uther was proud of his son and acknowledged his finer qualities, including his courage, sense of justice and respect for him as his father. Nimueh was furious with Uther for starting the Great Purge and outlawing magic, and thus became Uther's most dangerous enemy until her death at the hands of Merlin. Mordred. Nimueh warned Uther that there would be grave consequences, but he ignored her, not knowing that Ygraine would die in the process. ", This boy won't be the last to die on your behalf. Why does Merlin save Morgana when she's about to die? Uther was led to believe that Morgause had died shortly after her birth. Born of Magic By: King Prat Set after 1x13. However, it is implied that Nimueh did indeed chose Ygraine to die, since she was able to take Gaius' life in exchange for Merlin. In all those episodes, completely despite the many evil or ruthless sorcerers and magical creatures, we have been "told" that magic is a good thing and that it has to be re-established in Camelot in order to make it the greatest kingdom ever. Uther never discriminated or fought someone who believed in something, like some religious people did and still do. He called her his "heart and soul" when talking to Nimueh in "Excalibur". Arthur spent the next night mourning over his passing, saddened at his loss of both his parents to magic. And why is it Merlin's destiny to protect Arthur, meaning why was Merlin born as the chosen one to help and push Arthur into that direction, obviously chosen by the Old Religion, when it would have been so much easier to not let Igraine die or to not have created Arthur, since Uther's hatred for magic wouldn't have even started in this case? It is likely that Ygraine was also very much in love with him. King UtherYour MajestyMy LordSireYour HighnessFather (by Arthur)Stupid, arrogant old tyrant (by Dragoon) Uther showed poor judgement on various occasions regarding magic, selectively accusing and refusing to accuse people of sorcery but only sometimes wrongly identifying magic-users. Uther truly did love Ygraine but he had a brief relationship with Vivienne, the wife of Gorlois, while Gorlois was away fighting a battle. Gender: And Arthur is in the lucky position that he has friends like Merlin and Gaius who guide him and take care of his emotional health, otherwise Arthur would become similar to Uther, given that he doesn't have a probem with killing others (and meanwhile and sadly, Merlin follows that path), also mistrusts magic and has seen people die by its hands, especially his own father. Since he didn't kill Gaius and Nimueh, he assumingly also let go off other sorcerers for a while, but maybe changed that by time when more and more magical sorcerers/witches started to hate and probably stop Uther in the fight against magic. Arthur commented that Uther would "stop listening" whenever magic was mentioned, such was his blind and prejudiced fixation on eradicating it. As we learnt from season three, Merlin was capable of demanding Kilgharrah against the dragon's will and Kilgharrah had to do whatever Merlin told him to do. He wanted to save Arthur from being seduced by magic and from being killed by it, by all the evil sorcerers out there that non-magical people could hardly defend themselves against. The enchantment was such that when presented with clear evidence of the troll's plans, he still refused to believe it. The most powerful magic at all caused a terrible thing and killed an innocent person, pushed someone into grief and misery and caused a terrible hunt. He was later dragged into the throne room where Morgause removed his crown, leading Uther to furiously declare that Morgause had no right to the throne, only for Morgana to reveal herself and remark that she did. But how was Uther supposed to justify his hunt on magic when on the other hand teaching his children that good can come from it (like Arthur)? The Old Religion. He fought those of whom he thought would conspire with the very "real" (on the show) evil, but not due to different religious beliefs (like in real life that people go to hell when denying God/Allah, for example) but because of real and evident powers that were uncontrollable and dangerous. I was not right to betray you. You will be a great King" -. He could go through walls and telekinetically lift objects, ironically being a magical creature himself when returning as a spirit, not having a choice when Arthur summoned his spirit with magical help. With Merlin on his side, can Arthur build the kingdom he was destined to create? Deceased Of course, the Old religion is not like a religion that we know. Who kills Arthur? Uther had no idea that Morgana sided with her half sister. Uther claimed that Morgana's [step-]father, Gorlois, was the greatest man he'd ever known. Uther's mental state was so damaged that he did not recover from the ordeal and was subsequently unable to rule the kingdom as he had done, leaving his son, Arthur, to take over as regent. It's only natural. It's my responsibility to protect the people of this land from its enemies. Uther orders to have Gwen executed because she is suspected of witchcraft. Nimueh agreed and used magic to allow Ygraine to conceive a child, thus producing a son and heir, Arthur Pendragon. As a consequence, Arthur routinely believed himself to be "a big disappointment", though this was untrue as Uther cared about Arthur more than anyone with the exception of Morgana, stating that he meant more to him than the entire kingdom and certainly more than his own life (Excalibur). Arthur made a serious attempt to kill his father but was ultimately persuaded out of his rage by Merlin, after which his relationship with Uther recovered (The Sins of the Father). However, Uther was friends with the powerful witch Nimueh whom he had trusted. Now imagine if just a few of them were at odds with some people or maybe even kingdoms. All magic users and people suspected of using magic were killed under Uther's command. You and Arthur, you mean everything to me. A traditional jousting tournament was held in Camelot before Uther's marriage to Ygraine. I loved your mother. It has been obvious from the beginning of the show that Uther loved Igraine very much, maybe even more than it was good for him. This is a character who has learnt magic to pick up women in the most sleazy possible. All episodes until The Wicked DayAppears as a spirit in The Death Song of Uther Pendragon. Why does Uther hate magic so much? Uther tried him and had him condemned to death. Fortunately, this ghost was actually the ghost of a former good kid/sorcerer and fortunately, the boy decided to forgive Arthur. Arthur also began to follow Uther's ways which was shown when he learned of a dragon egg which he chose to destroy to wipe magic out of the kingdom, only for Merlin to get there first and protect it (Aithusa). From now on I will remember that, in the fight against magic, you are the one person I can trust. Although he was overwhelmed by Gilli's use of magic, he still managed to fend him off without injury before Merlin countered Gilli's magic for Uther to defeat him with ease (The Sorcerer's Shadow). Uther was told that the girl had died and Gaius was sworn to secrecy. He is constantly lying to Arthur, manipulating him and he is also using him like a puppet on a string, only to have him fullfill Merlin's wishes (restoring magic). And this dilemma naturally leads again to the one and only solution: forbidding magic completely and keeping the secret safe (Arthur's birth). In his desperate situation, Uther seemed to forget about the status quo that separates the king from the servant and showed clearly his vulnerability while talking to Merlin like an equal. In her case, Merlin was more concerned about how Mordred would react instead of Arthur wanted to execute a magic people. Nimueh warned him about consequences and that a life had to be taken but obviously not about the possibility that it could be Igraine's life. However, he sustained a fatal wound in doing so, leaving Arthur with the dilemma of whether or not to use magic to save him. He sentenced his old friend to death but was clearly reluctant and upset about the thought of killing Gaius, even though he had told him he was a sorcerer. Alvarr's parents ware captured by Uther's forces and were burned at the stake (apparently Alvarr witnessed this happen). Arthur eventually returned to Camelot after Lancelot sacrificed himself to defeat the Dorocha (The Darkest Hour). Uther was too proud to admit that he was theone who had caused Gaius' suffering until Gaius told him so. How can you hope to understand? Moreover, Uther's hatred of magic would not make sense if he had seen her death coming and willingly sacrificed his beloved wife, on whom, obviously, his whole personality was based. Uther had a brief relationship with Vivienne, the wife of Gorlois, while Gorlois was fighting in a war, assumingly before his marriage with Ygraine. Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information. King Uther Pendragon You know nothing of what it means to be King. Uther had no idea of Arthur's secret relationship with Guinevere until Morgana meddled in Arthur and Gwen's secret relationship the year after she was taken from Camelot by her half-sister Morgause did the king find out about his son's secret love affair. It was his hatred of magic and severe punishment of those who used it that ultimately caused Morgana to turn against him. However, Morgana was furious that Uther had lied to her all her life, thinking he cared more about his reputation than he did about her. Without downplaying the cruelty of the Great Purge, the only thing he was fighting was just that: a thing. Shocked, the King told Gaius that he had been tricked, but Gaius replied that his hatred of magic and obsession with destroying it that caused his friends to become foes and his servants to become sorcerers. Because Uther was still unable to rule Camelot, Arthur still remained in charge of the kingdom and trusted Gwen to look after him. A troll later used magic to cause Uther to become infatuated with her and make her his wife. He commanded the King's forces in Ireland when, with Merlin, he acquired the "Giant's Ring" as a memorial to the dead of the "Night of the Long Knives". Gaius seemingly respected the law in Uther's opinion, the druids didn't when continuing to practise magic and therefore conspiring with the "evil". The tears streaking his pale cheeks. The first two posts talked about five lessons for dealing with rejection and how to manage receiving a "no" from a potential client. Later, Uther displayed his deep protectiveness and love for his son by taking up his sword in his weakened state and defending him from an assassin. He never saved Morgana. It probably would. Wanna see what I snuck into the house? No. Yet despite this, Uther evidently had a great deal of affection for Arthur and considered him the most important thing he had, on several occasions putting his own life at stake to save Arthur's. From that moment on, Uther kept his promise and softened towards Morgana. Arthur then informed Uther of vandalism in the castle, at which point the entire court began to suffer flatulence. When Morgause took his crown from him, Morgana revealed that she was working with her half-sister to dethrone him so she could become Queen and told him that she hated him beyond understanding. He later failed to send them, resulting in Gorlois's death. When Gorlois died, Uther promised to take care of Morgana. Gaius, however, pointed out that he had not suffered at Aredian's hands but at Uther's since Aredian had been free to continue his investigation at his own discretion. He hated Morgause for taking Morgana away and later blamed her for poisoning his beloved daughter against him. Cenred was notified of Uther's condition and that Camelot was in a weak position. Uther was later freed by Arthur but was so broken by his daughter's betrayal that he did not try to defend himself from Morgause's army of immortal soldiers. The fact that he never even wanted to talk about Igraine showed that the mere thought of her obviously caused too much pain. There's a good argument about whether Uther may have softened to magic if he found out his beloved 'ward' had . It is at this point that the most famous episode in Uther's life is related. That reason is the magic community. Uther's guards later captured Alvarr, a sorcerer who was plotting against him. She enchanted a necklace that would reverse any healing spell and worsen the ailment tenfold. It remains unknown whether he knew of Morgana's magic or, at least, suspected her or not. After leaving Uther to sleep and recover from his ordeal, Merlin insisted they tell Uther that Morgana had been responsible, but Gaius replied that Uther would never believe their word against his beloved ward. It was Merlin, a dragonlord, who ended the slaughter, but only because Kligharrah was the dragon he could demand. When Uther learned that Morgause knew something of Ygraine, he refused to allow Arthur to go, fearing what she would tell him. Differing between good and evil sorcerers but hunting magic despite of this, shows that he was willing to make exceptions for those he knew personally and liked as long as the new law was not violated, and it also shows how determined he was to execute the law at all costs, being a strict ruler in the desperate try to bring order and what he considered to be safety to the land. He simply wanted to manipulate and to prove something to Arthur that actually contradicted itself - if magic was really used also for good, he would have healed Uther immediately instead of watching him die and trying to heal him later when he saw an advantage for himself and his kind. He based it on stories of the original 6th-century Myrddin, set long after his time frame for the life of Merlin Ambrosius. His fight was lost the second he started it. Morgana later met with Morgause and gave her a handkerchief that contained his tears, which they used, along with a mandrake root, to prepare a spell that would cause Uther to lose his mind by bringing his worst fears to life. To me, that's a much more interesting q. And the same powerful magic was used by Merlin to serve his purpose and cost the life of the one who was magic's victim in the first place. Yes. Uther defends his wife, Catrina, while being under the influence of a spell. Gaius was a good servant to Uther and Uther looked on him as a friend, probably his closest since Morgana's father died (A Remedy to Cure All Ills, Excalibur). At the start of the Great Purge, Uther gave Gaius a list of all people suspected of using Magic to be killed. Supposingly, in Uther's eyes, everyone who turned to magic lost his soul in the process, which would explain why he even had children drowned who were born with magic, because Uther was actually a very protective person and set great value upon honour. Some ten years later, Uther sent Gorlois into battle and promised him reinforcements. Why can't Merlin die? Camelot must come before all else, even you. He only acted when he saw a chance to bring back magic and by that took advantage of the misery of at least two people, namely his best friend Arthur and the one who was about to die (Uther). Living in fear (because of hiding her powers) and disagreeing with and opposing the one she was afraid of (Uther, if he had learnt about her powers, as she thought) is a total different thing from starting to hate and destroy everyone she once cared about and who were on her side. After discovering Ygraine was unable to have children, Uther asked Nimueh to help them. She attempted to murder her father in his sleep but was stopped by Merlin who woke Uther by smashing the window of his chamber. All they had to do was to send their most powerful weapon to the place they wanted to attack. What is necessary to make other sorecerers, maybe even Merlin, choosing the dark side and to get insane? Later, when Merlin fought and ultimately killed Nimueh, he doubted that it was the Old Religion that randomly chose a life in exchange for another but that it was Nimueh herself. Merlin reveals his magic to an enraged Uther, who then attempts to kill the young warlock. Merlin is not merely the really good guy anymore but a fighter for his own beliefs and for his "religion", disregarding what way he choses. Arthur was not only the future king but most of all Uther's son. As Arthur's attacker was about to kill him however, Uther awoke upon realising the danger his son was in. No. Despite the cruelty towards sorcerers/magic and the Great Purge (which, of course, can't be justified or excused), Uther was described as an overprotective man who most of all wanted to protect his children and whose effort was to provide safety, which was shown when he always avoided to go to war with other kingdoms. However, Morgana overheard him and informed Morgause. But he can question his destiny and most of all the way he meanwhile tries to fullfill it. He stood for everything this kingdom represents. It's understandable that Agravaine would want Uther to be overthrown. Before the Great Purge, Uther was friends with Nimueh and welcomed her into his kingdom. I could never have done anything to hurt her. Is he on the way to the dark(er) side and is magic slowly corrupting him? Again it is obvious that the safety of the world lies in the hands of single magical people who most of the time are neither mercyful nor just. The fact that Nimueh was his friend back then gives us a hint that despite the danger of evil magic and the chaos, he was not prejusticed towards magic but realised that when he was betrayed by the Old Religion/Nimueh, it was impossible to resist the temptation of using magic without falling from grace sooner or later. What do other kingdoms think about magic or the ban of it? Arthur and Merlin therefore failed in their mission and Morgause created an army of immortal soldiers from Cenred's army. She isn't the center of att. It is known that Uther thought of Gwen as nothing special as she was a mere servant. Is it any wonder that Uther and certainly a lot of other people were scared by it and tried to get rid of it once and for all? He declared he would never give up searching despite being told by Gaius that, after an entire year, he should call off the search and accept that Morgana was gone. He also cared deeply for Morgana, and though he locked her in the dungeons when she defied him, he later apologised to her, admitting he was wrong, and told her that she was like a daughter to him. Uther's harsh behaviour possibly represented the extensive guilt he suffered from the manner of Ygraine's death, which had been caused by his need for an heir, probably not caring that there would be grave consequences. Answer (1 of 7): By magic, perhaps you're referring to the practice of the mystical arts by witches and wizards. And I wish Uther would have lived to see it to finally make peace with what brought misery upon him and countless others on both sides. And since a life has to be taken in exchange for another, even the healing magic harbors unforseen dangers and often the death of an innocent person. He only survived due to the protection of Arthur, Elyan, Gwaine, Percival, Lancelot, Leon, and the other surviving Knights of Camelot. When Arthur was defeated in combat by a woman named Morgause, he was spared only on the condition that he come to her and accept another challenge. He walked straight into the lion's den at Tintagel Catsle and seduced the lovely Duchess. He also thought that showing any kind of weakness would be a danger for the kingdom since Camelot's enemies would take advantage of it. He asked her to use magic to allow his wife, Ygraine, to conceive a child resulting in the birth of Arthur. "I was concerned at first that the account would be perceived as shallow because it focused on scarves rather than the incredible accomplishments of someone like Dr. Birx," Strout said. Morgana: I have magic, Merlin. Arthur's prejudice against magic seemed to have changed up to a certain point, but when Morgana confronted Arthur, he surprisingly mentioned his father by saying, "you can't blame me for my father's sins" (The Sword in the Stone), despite the fact that he himself still prohibited magic in Camelot. Uther therefore sentenced Gwen to death and refused to heed Arthur's angry objections. Despite this, Uther still sentenced him to death when he was accused of using magic by the Witchfinder, Aredian. Eventually, Merlin was able to force the goblin out of Gaius and so Gaius informed Uther of Merlin's innocence. And you took her from me. There had no be a reason, magic had only been purged from the kingdom 20 years ago, Uther was much older than that so at some point in his life something must of hardened his heart. However, just before his fatal wounding, upon seeing his son was in danger, Uther's determination to save his son allowed him to regain his lost swordplay skills, allowing him to take on and eventually defeat The Gleeman in sword combat, although his footwork weakness was once again displayed in this duel as he lost his balance a few times. It seems like it is not about right and wrong, good and bad anymore but only about the Old Religion vs the ban of magic and a life without the Old Religion. Uther retained his prejudices after death and disliked many of the reforms and decisions Arthur made during his reign, including his marriage. When Gorlois was fighting on the Northern Plains, Vivienne had a brief affair with Uther, resulting in the birth of Morgana Pendragon.
